Information for Scouting leaders about California's law AB 506 requiring registered volunteers and staff to complete training in child abuse and neglect reporting, and undergo Live Scan background checks
As a Scouting volunteer, you understand the importance of keeping children safe. Assembly Bill (AB 506) was passed by the State of California requiring volunteers and staff of Youth Service Organizations to complete training in child abuse and neglect reporting, and undergo Live Scan background checks.
AB 506 became effective January 1, 2022. All registered BSA volunteer positions and employees including camp staff must comply with AB506. In addition, other volunteers who are 18 years of age or older and who have direct contact with, or supervision of, children (under age 18) for more than 16 hours a month or 32 hours per year must complete a Live Scan background check (the digital version of inked fingerprinting) and complete online mandated reporter training.
A registered position includes Den Leader, Webelos Leader, Assistant Cubmaster, Cubmaster, Pack Chair, Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, Assistant Venture Leader, Venture Leader, Troop Chair, and Merit Badge Counselors are adults that have contact with youth members on a regular basis which must be AB 506 Trained and Certified have had a Live Scan.
Parents or adults whom attend Courts of Honor, Events, is a carpool driver and are not in a registered position do not have to do the AB 506 Training and Live Scan process.
